Period following the Second World War

German armies besieged the city on the 30th of August, 1944  The commanding base of Sicherheitsdienst and the Gestapo were set up here, together with a hostage camp. Two transports of the prisoners were despatched from the city to the concentration camp of Mauthausen.  The city was liberated by the Soviet armies of the 2nd Ukrainian front on 10. April 1945. The armies built a new, wood bridge at the place of the old one that was destroyed by the Germans. The bridge; however, has not been preserved.  Following the liberation, 7 mass graves of 69 slain anti-fascist fighters were unearthed at the Brezina municipal forest. Today, a monument at the place there commemorates this event. The Czechoslovak Republic was re-instated in May 1945, following the German capitulation. Government crisis of February 1948 definitely made it possible for the Communists to become the dominant power.  It was virtually immediately after the coup when a mass prosecution of the opposition started, accompanied with most flagrant violence. However, on the outside, the regime would create the image of ongoing development and a willingness to build the common "wealth" and "brighter morrows".  Reformatory process of the Communist party's leadership under the leadership of Alexander Dubček (lived and worked in Trenčín for a number of years) of the Spring of 1968 impacted the whole Czechoslovak community.  The Prague Spring (Pražská jar). Military invasion of the socialistic countries of the Warsaw pact on August 21, 1968 brought this developing Czechoslovak reform to an end . This signalled the beginning of a sad era of the so-called normalisation and building of socialism under the permanent military presence of the Soviets.
