By the end of the 4th century, Roman dominance over the Slovak territory came to its end and a period of moving of nations began. It was during that time when the Slavs came to the territory of today's Slovakia. A number of findings from the 5th and 6th centuries found between today’s Trenčín and Nové Mesto nad Váhom centuries testify of their presence. Findings unearthed directly in Trenčín come from the 7 - 12th centuries. The city was a strategic centre of the Great Moravian Empire. Settlement of the Slavs in our territory used to be quite dense and developed. The Great Moravian culture in the northern regions would remain until the 10th century A.D. Itinerant Hungarians who by the end of the 9th century began to penetrate into the Carpathian basin, little by little subdued the Slavic inhabitants. The following 1000 years passed under the Hungarian dominance and the original Slavic territory became part of the Hungarian state.
