The Roman Inscription - Trenčín's birth certificate

“Tomorrow we are going to roast those defiant Germans!”  - Go for it, dear Valerius !”

We find first written accounts of the existence of Trenčín in a work called „Geografia“ by a Greek-Roman polyhistor called Claudius Ptolemaius (90 – 168 A.D.). This document is the first to mention Trenčín as „Leukaristos“ , although the people knew also other names such as „Laugaricio“, or „Leugaricio“. This name has been authenticated by the famous Roman inscription engraved into the castle rock, left by the emperor Marcus Aurelius during the wars between the Romans and the Germanic tribes.  Existence of the inscription places Trenčín into an exclusive group of European cities with the antique past.   Its verbatim translation (Legate’s name supplied) reads: To the victory of the emperors – army that lies at Laugaricio, 855 soldiers of the II. legion (made on the order of Marcus Valerius Maximianus, legate of the II. auxiliary legion)
