Its historical and recent character makes the city of Trenčín the centre of the Middle Váh region. In 1996, following a new territorial division of Slovakia, the city was made the seat of the Trenčín Region.

Last year we celebrated the 1825th anniversary of the existence of the original record mentioning the presence of legionaries in the territory of today’s Trenčín.  Saying this, we think of the Roman inscription on the rock below the castle that documents the existence of a military fort. To us, this inscription is the birth certificate of our city.

Through its history, the city of Trenčín has witnessed many a significant change that would mould the lives of its citizens and other communities living in the surrounding regions. It should not surprise us then to see Trenčín becoming the ruling centre of Matthew Czak of Trenčín.  Matthew, however, was not the only one who came to appreciate the city’s strategic location.  All changes and times of rises and falls, would leave their insignia on today’s image of Trenčín – a city that since May 1, 2004 has become open to the open Europe.

Territory of the city extends over 10 cadastre zones with total area of 8,199.70 ha. As of December 31, 2004, the city numbered 57,271 inhabitants. All Trenčín people are living in a landmark period of transfer of competencies from the state to local administration, when the city takes on her shoulders a real responsibility for future development. If we are to make a successful step toward developed and competitive Slovak and European markets, we have to implement important tasks and projects in the areas of infrastructure, industrial parks, or strategic decision making when meetings with international investors.

Notwithstanding the existence of general trend in increasing costs of living and taxes, locally known as charges, Trenčín has been moving in the opposite direction.  By cancelling the majority of local charges, the city would like to, within its own limits, alleviate financial burden for its citizens as well as businesses. Local committees of individual city districts may have a significant impact on municipal investment expenditures. Absolute priorities in form of three to four investment projects have been designated by these committees and incorporated into the municipal budget. Use and distribution of funds collected from real estate tax have undergone a significant change. All revenues generated from real estate tax from legal entities will be used to repair and maintain roads and the municipal mass transport. Local committees at individual city districts will decide on the use of revenues from real estate tax from physical persons. Such revenues may be used for maintenance purposes, reconstructions of children playgrounds, and green planting.

Trenčín is becoming a better place for living. Besides, its current rating is the best any Slovak city can get. The rating reflects a good management of municipal resources.  Based on these outcomes, Trenčín was given a long-term loan by a significant bank institution with the interest of 2.6% per annum. This is still a rare phenomenon in Slovakia.

Trenčín is a functional, dynamic city with one of the best credits from among other Slovak cities. Besides, we belong to the least indebted cities, which enables us to draw on the manifold resources designated to the city’s development. Such basis is an ideal springboard toward better future of Trenčín. Enjoying the attention of new investors, we have been able to implement large-scale investments. Transfer of competencies has not affected us as much as other Slovak cities.
