Health and social care

Trenčín has had its own infirmary since the Middle Ages. General hospital was established in 1847. The hospital was one of the oldest in Slovakia. Today’s municipal health care facility includes hospital with outpatient clinic that houses 20 wards. Approximately 200 physicians and other 900 healthcare workers are employed here. Almost 80 emergency units offer their services, from general practitioners for children and adults, to a whole array of specialised medical offices. In the city, there are also a number of smaller medical offices, centres, and 17 pharmacies.

Social Services of the city of Trenčín - a municipal budgetary institution, provides for care to the elderly and heavily handicapped, and also operates premises of caregiver services. Non-public institutions such as The Humanity House, and Catholic Charity, also carry out caregiver services. There are plans to establish a hospice in the near future, under the auspices of the Association of the Hospice and Palliative Care.

Orphanage and Children’s Town located in Zlatovce were established in the framework of alternative care for abandoned children. The Town was the first facility for alternative family-like education of children in Slovakia. House of Social Services DEMY directs its activities to physically handicapped children.
