Mgr. Richard Rybníček, 41, is the Mayor of the city Trenčín.
A former Slovak journalist and Director of STV (The Slovak National Television), Rybníček ran in 2010 as an independent candidate for the post of Mayor of Trenčín winning with a margin of over 72%.
He graduated from the Central School of Economics and studied journalism at Comenius University in Bratislava. He played the drums in a band higgledy-piggledy. He worked as a domestic political journalist CSTKAM (Reuters later), the daily SME, and SITA. In 1994, he completed professional training in the German Bundestag in Bonn. In 1995, he served as spokesman for the mayor of Bratislava. In 1996-1997 he studied as a fellow of the Konrad Adenauer political science at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Bonn.
Co-founder of the TV JOJ, and the executive director of the Institute for Public Affairs.
In January 2003, the Slovak Parliament chose him as the General Director of the Slovak National Television. He initiated the largest restructuring of the public media institution in the history of Slovakia. Starting with a loss of 15.5 million Euro and debt of 32 million Euro, he restructured programs, brought new attractive programming, such as “Superstar” (analogy of the American Idol). On July, 10, 2006 six months before the end of his four-year tenure, resigned due to his conviction that he achieved everything his goal leaving the national television with the net profit of 500 thousand Euro, no debt, and 22 million Euro in reserves.
His ambition as a political figure is to endorse accountability in the city management.
